How the Spelling Bee Works

Round 1: Written Test

  • Location: Apollo MPR
  • Format: 25-question written test
  • For: Grades 1–5
  • When: January 15, 2026, at 3:30 PM
  • Students will be given 25 words selected from the attached booklet, along with 5 tie‑breaker words from the Book of Champions (4,000‑word list).
  • The goal of Round 1 is to identify the top 10 highest scorers from the school who will advance to Round 2.
  • In addition, the top two performers in each grade will be recognized and awarded certificates.

Round 2: Oral Rounds

  • Round 2 will begin with one non‑elimination warm‑up round.

  • All subsequent rounds will be elimination rounds.

  • If, in any elimination round (for example, Round 10), all remaining participants miss the word, no one will be eliminated and all participants will advance to the next round.

  • Elimination rounds will continue until one winner remains.

  • The goal of Round 2 is to select:

    • One School Champion
    • One Backup/Alternate

  • Only the School Champion will represent the school at the Regional Spelling Bee, scheduled for early March.
